Introduce yourself

Hello, teacher! Thank you for calling. My name is Li Weiyi, a sophomore at Jilin International Studies University, in northeast China. I'm majoring in Japanese, in a special experimental class for Japanese, English and Korean. Although my major is Japanese, English is really important to me, because our program trains us to use three languages. That's one big reason I joined this Summer Work and Travel program — I want to improve my spoken English in a real English environment and experience American culture in person. I'm from Taiyuan, Shanxi Province — a city famous for noodles and vinegar. In my free time, I like traveling and swimming. I'm an open-minded and easy-going person, and I get along well with my classmates. I know the job will be a basic, entry-level position, and I'm totally OK with that. I'll follow the rules, work hard, and see it as a great chance to grow up. Thank you!

Hello, teacher! Thank you for calling.

Major & plan

I'm majoring in Japanese at Jilin International Studies University. To be exact, I'm in an experimental class that trains students in three languages: Japanese, English and Korean. I chose this major because I've been interested in languages and international communication since high school, and our university has a really good language environment. As for the future, after graduation I hope to work in an international company that uses Japanese and English — maybe in trade or cultural exchange — or continue my master's degree. So this program means a lot to me: it can improve my English and make me more independent before I start my career.

记忆点:experimental class for Japanese, English and Korean

家乡Hometown

I'm from Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province in northern China. It's a city with more than 2,500 years of history. Taiyuan is famous for its vinegar and noodles — we have hundreds of kinds of noodles, and Shanxi people eat them every day. If you visit, I recommend Jinci Temple and the Shanxi Museum, where you can learn about the history of the Jin State. My city used to be a coal-energy center, but now it's becoming greener and more modern. I love my hometown, especially the food.

素材:vinegar & noodles · Jinci Temple · Shanxi Museum

Travel

Yes, I love traveling. I have been to 【换成你真实去过的城市】. My favorite is Xi'an, because it was the capital of thirteen dynasties. I visited the Terracotta Warriors there, and riding a bike on the ancient city wall at sunset was amazing. Traveling makes me open-minded and helps me understand different cultures. That's also part of why I want to join this program — I see America as my next big journey, but this time with a job and a real cultural exchange.

Traveling makes me open-minded.

挂科Failed a subject

Luckily, no. I make a study plan every term and review regularly, so my scores are stable. My strongest subject is Japanese listening and speaking. But I believe college is not only about scores, so I also spend time on communication skills and activities outside class.

I failed 【科目】 in my first year, because I didn't adapt to college study at the beginning. But I took it seriously: I made a new study plan, asked my teachers for advice, and passed it later with a much higher score. That failure actually taught me how to manage my time.

Hobby

I have several hobbies. My favorite is swimming — I swim twice a week. It keeps me healthy and helps me relax after study. I also like traveling; visiting new places is the best way to learn the real world outside textbooks. Hobbies make my life colorful and help me make friends easily.

English name

A(无英文名,真实):Actually I don't have a formal English name. My pinyin name is Weiyi — "Wei" means humble, and "Yi" means one, or unique. My parents hoped I would stay modest and be myself. It's easy to say, so most foreign teachers just call me Weiyi.

B(起一个):My English name is Will. It sounds close to "Wei" in my Chinese name, and "will" also means determination — I want to be someone who never gives up easily.

C(用日语名):In my Japanese class, my teacher gave me a Japanese name, Asumi. Some classmates call me that. But for this program, I'm happy to be Weiyi — a name is just the start of communication.

Job experience

Yes. I worked as a part-time tutor, teaching a middle-school student for one summer. The hardest part was patience — he wanted to give up easily, so I learned to break big problems into small steps and encourage him. The best thing was the moment his score improved — I felt my work really mattered. That job taught me communication and responsibility.

没有兼职(诚实版):To be honest, I haven't had a formal paid job yet — this program will be my first one, and that's exactly why I want it so much. In school, I joined volunteer activities, where I learned to talk with strangers and stay patient. I'm ready to start from the most basic position and learn fast.

Why the USA

Three reasons. First, language — English is part of my study every day, but I want real, living English, and the best classroom is a real American workplace. Second, culture — SWT is an official cultural exchange program of the US State Department, and I'd love to experience American culture in person, not just from movies. Third, growth — working in a totally new environment will make me more independent and brave. For me, the money is not the main point; the experience is.

The experience matters more than the money.

The SWT program

My understanding is: SWT — Summer Work and Travel — is a cultural exchange program under the US State Department, for university students from all over the world. We get a J-1 visa, work in entry-level positions, mostly in the service industry, for about three months in the summer, and after finishing the work part, we can travel inside the US within the legal time. I know the jobs are basic and not easy — like housekeeping or food service — and we can't choose the exact company or city. But that's fine, because the real purpose is cultural exchange: to experience American life, improve my English, and share what I learn when I come back.

USA & city

To me, America is a young but diverse country — people from all over the world live there, so you can experience many cultures in one place. I also know it for its beautiful national parks, like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. My favorite city is New York — the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, and so many great museums. But honestly, I'm open to any city — every place has its own charm, and I'll accept the program's arrangement. For me, the experience matters more than the location.

I'm open to any city — I'll accept the program's arrangement.

Flight delayed

First, I will stay calm — it happens a lot in travel. Then, three steps. Step one, go to the airline counter right away and rebook the earliest possible flight. Step two, use the airport WiFi to send my new itinerary to my American employer, the sponsor, and my project teachers in China, and tell them I may arrive late for check-in or housing. Step three, call my parents and my teacher in China to let them know I'm safe. I'll also keep all the receipts and documents, in case I need proof for the airline or insurance.

说出 itinerary(行程单)会加分。

Difficult situation

When things go wrong, I stay positive first, because panic never solves anything. Then I ask myself: what exactly is the problem, and who can help me most directly — maybe my manager, the landlord, the sponsor, or my teachers. I believe communication is the key to most problems. After solving it, I think about what I learned. Difficulties are normal in a new country, and they make me grow faster than easy days.

I believe communication is the key.

Separation

I will miss them, of course — it's my first time away for so long. But three or four months is short compared with what I can learn. And nowadays technology makes it easy: we can video-chat anytime — a twelve-hour time difference just means I call them in my morning, their evening. More importantly, my parents support me; they hope I become more independent. I see it as training for my future: one day I will live on my own anyway, and this program is a safe and valuable start.

Unfriendly colleagues

I won't take it too personally at first. Maybe they are just busy, or shy, or it's a cultural difference — in some workplaces people don't smile a lot, but that doesn't mean they are unfriendly. I'll be polite and positive every day, learn the rules fast, and try to help. Small talk helps, too, like "How was your weekend?" If it still really affects my work, I'll talk to them sincerely or ask my manager for advice. I believe most problems between people come from misunderstanding, and honest communication can fix them.

Nobody picks me up

First, don't panic, and don't leave the airport with strangers. I'll find WiFi or a phone and contact my employer and the sponsor right away — maybe they're just late, or we misunderstood the time. While waiting, I'll stay in a safe public place, like the information desk. If my employer confirms nobody can come, I'll ask for the exact address of my housing, take an official taxi there, and keep the receipt. I'll also keep my parents and teachers informed. The key is: stay safe, keep communicating, and confirm everything before I move.

Take food?

No, I won't. The food belongs to the company, and taking it without permission is not right — it may even be treated as stealing, and I could lose my job, which would break my program. If a colleague suggests it, I'll politely refuse — I won't judge them, but I'll keep my own hands clean. If I have questions, I'll ask my manager what the company policy is. Rules and honesty first — a small advantage is never worth my record.

Rules and honesty first.

Called back to work

That's a tricky one, and for me the key is the dates. My school vacation and my legal work period end on September 15th. So if my boss wants me back on September 10th, that's still within my contract — I would love to help him, so I'll adjust my travel plan and come back. But if it goes beyond September 15th, I'm sorry, I really can't, because working after my program's end date is against US law and would seriously affect my visa record. I'll explain this politely to my boss — I believe an honest "why" is better than a fake "yes".

Lost documents

First, I'll call the police and get a police report — I need it for everything else. Then I'll contact my sponsor immediately; they will guide me. If it's my passport, I'll go to the Chinese Embassy for a new travel document, and the DS-2019 form can be reissued by its issuing agency. I always keep copies of my passport and DS-2019 in my email, so that makes things easier. I'll also protect my bank cards, and tell my employer in case I'm late for work.

Not enough hours

I won't just complain. First, I'll talk to my employer sincerely and ask if there are extra shifts I can take. I'll also manage my budget and cut unnecessary spending. If my work hours are seriously fewer than promised, I'll contact the sponsor for help — that's what they are for. Stay calm and solve it step by step.

If I'm fired

First, stay calm and ask the reason politely — maybe it's a misunderstanding I can fix. If the decision is final, I'll contact the sponsor and my project teachers right away, because finding a new legal position is their job, and I must never work illegally, not even for one day. If it was my mistake, I'll admit it and learn from it. One door closed doesn't mean the journey is over.

One door closed doesn't mean the journey is over.
